Nic Fox
Instructor
Sergeant Nic Fox has served with a Northern California police department for 19 years and currently functions as the full-time supervisor for both the crewed and uncrewed aviation units. In addition to his supervisory responsibilities, Sergeant Fox remains operationally active as a Tactical Flight Officer. He holds a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 Remote Pilot certification, has participated in hundreds of active UAS missions, and is currently working toward pilot ratings in both fixed-wing and rotorcraft aircraft. Prior to promotion, he held assignments as a Field Training Officer and Detective, gaining broad operational and investigative experience.

Sergeant Fox played a pivotal role in developing and implementing the department’s citywide camera and license plate recognition (LPR) program, formally known as Police Observation Devices (PODS). This initiative directly led to the creation of the first Real-Time Crime Center (RTCC) in the region. Building on his RTCC experience, he championed the exploration, development, and institutional adoption of the department’s Uncrewed Aircraft System (UAS) program.

The UAS unit currently consists of 22 ancillary pilots and approximately 90 aircraft. The team conducts an average of 400 missions annually and maintains two pilots on-call to support tactical operations throughout California’s capital city.

Sergeant Fox has been instrumental in the UAS program since its inception, guiding it to full operational status in 2019. Under his leadership, the unit established a specialized Micro-UAS cadre that deploys small first-person-view (FPV) drones for high-risk tactical environments. This cadre has advanced the practical application of micro-drone technology in law enforcement, helping establish best practices and operational standards that have since been adopted across the public safety sector.

Through his oversight of both crewed and uncrewed aviation assets, Sergeant Fox has refined the integrated deployment of these platforms to ensure safe, efficient, and mission-appropriate use. He emphasizes that crewed and uncrewed aircraft are complementary capabilities rather than replacement systems, optimizing operational effectiveness by leveraging the strengths of each platform in coordinated aviation responses.
